Britain has launched a scheme to study the demographics of the recent unrest as far as magistrate cases, convictions, the age and other issues related to protesters are concerned.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - An analysis carried out by the Guardian newspaper revealed that 70 percent of those accused of participating in the event and in the ensuing mayhem, had travelled from outside their areas.

Furthermore, a Guardian analysis of over 1,000 cases before magistrates courts so far has found the majority of defendants have been remanded in custody - even when they have pleaded guilty to relatively minor offences.

The Ministry of Justice has called on Magistrates Courts across the country (in a boast of transparency) to provide full court results details of all unrest-related cases.

The courts are required to record each defendant's name, age, address, charge, plea and sentence - as well as if the case is remanded in jail or committed to the crown court for a jury trial.

So far, those people who are charged with offences linked with the unrest are overwhelmingly young, male and unemployed, according to the report.

The Metropolitan Police earlier said that almost half of those who have appeared in court so far and charged with being involved in the unrest and chaos in London are under the age of 18. The vast majority of those in court were aged under 25 - with many between 11 and 17. Only a very small number were aged over 30, the report said.

It also said that the defendants are overwhelmingly male, adding that only a few women have been seen in court so far, some of whom were 16 or under.
